About me

I am a testing specialist, on an ongoing journey to keep learning and sharing my expertise and experiences. Having done various other jobs, I have an extensive background and this has taught me that most tasks are done best when they are done by a team with people coming from different and diverse backgrounds. Everyone has something to bring to a project.

As can be seen from my resume, my experience in QA has been gained mostly in manual testing and QA management in the past few years. However, in the last year or so I decided to focus more on automated testing and QA Engineering. But with my past roles in other fields, like customer support, I have gained many skills and insights which are a great help in my current work. Skills and insights such as management, organisation, customer relations, UI/UX, usability and people skills.

In my last two positions, I have worked closely with both developers and designers on website development and functionality. Though in these positions my main tasks have been manual visual regression and manual functional testing, in the last year I have focused more on client-side automated testing with tools like Cypress, Puppeteer, Ghost Inspector and BackstopJS. Additionally, coaching team members on QA tools and processes is part of my current position as I feel that this is an important part of the job.

Although my past positions have been good and I have learned a lot, I continue to experiment and grow within this field and look forward to continuing this journey.

Growing up in the Netherlands, and having lived in various other countries, I love being part of multicultural environments. I would describe myself as a friendly, creative and proactive person. I like sharing knowledge and cherish the moments when there is a back and forth of expertise and talent.

Experience

QA Management at Interactive Tools (2019–2020)

At Interactive Tools GmbH I have been part of various teams and in this, I have been part of several projects. For most of them, I have set up test plans from scratch, including evaluating what type of testing was needed and creating the test cases and writing user stories.

For one of the clients, I helped setting up automated visual regression testing (using BackstopJS) and some end-to-end testing (using Cypress). With this particular client, the reins were pretty free, meaning I could experiment a bit with what worked and what didn’t. Seeing as this project also has a CI/CD process, integrating the visual regression into that was a challenge of its own. But together with other members of the team we made it work to our satisfaction and I am confident it will continue to work as needed.

Manual Tester at Interactive Tools (2019–2020)

Several projects within the company were in need of manual testing as well. Part of my task was setting up some testing frameworks which could be used across different projects. I was tasked with introducing a specific tool for this, Testpad. This tool makes it easy to create test cases and user stories which can be copied into other projects as well. On my recommendation, TestPad is now also used to document all the manual testing being done, be it specific feature testing or ad hoc and smoke testing.

QA Manager and Tester at Auto1 (2018)

In my position as a QA Manager at Auto1, I was part of reevaluating the current testing process and adjusting it to fit the changes within the team. This meant going through all the old processes already set up and evaluating each one to see if they were still needed. And after that, seeing what was missing and creating a new process to fit that gap. This also includes coaching team members on testing processes and QA in general.

I was also involved in evaluating an automated testing strategy for the marketing pages. These pages were constantly A/B tested, which led us to decide that automated testing was not the best way forward. Instead we set up a manual testing process, specifically for these pages.

Even though for the marketing pages we decided against automated testing, we did decide to implement automated testing for some of the other pages. I was responsible for setting up this automated testing, making sure that after a new feature role out all the necessary elements was still visible, most notably the various seals of certificates on those pages. This helped reduce the amount of visual manual testing and helped find bugs before the pages were pushed live.

Personal automation testing project (2020)

In order to practice working with Cypress, I created some automated tests for the ToDoMVC app (available on GitHub). Creating this repo helped me in not only understanding the basics of Cypress but also experimenting with some more specific tasks, which I have since been able to implement in automated tests at Interactive Tools GmbH.

Freelance tester (2020)

As a freelance tester, I have worked together with the developer of the Quarantify web app. I was part of the initial testing beta testing phase and helped set up a testing plan and test cases. Also coached on QA processes and what type of testing would make sense for this project. It happened during the COVID-19 Pandemic, and I personally felt it was very important to have these types of projects up and running as soon as possible.

Freelance translator (2013–2016)

As a freelance translator, I have been part of various projects. For the company Cal-Tech, I helped with the translations of the Dutch webshop Electronic Star in 2013. I was responsible for the translations of the German product descriptions to Dutch and English. Another translation project I was part of in 2016 was for the company Green Zones. This company offers information on all the various environmental rules and guidlines for car drivers in Europe. I helped with the translations of several of their websites, from German to Dutch and English.

Training

TAU (2019–2020)

After having my interest peaked about test automation I started looking for some online courses. I was drawn to the courses on Test Automation University after following a youtube tutorial on Applitools. I have been following their learning paths “Web UI”, “Javascript” and “Codeless”. My certifications can be found on their site.

Udemy (2019)

I used Udemy mostly to learn some basics of software testing and some Git basics. Some certificates include Introduction to Software Testing or Software QA Test Automation from scratch. Selenium IDE (SideeX), Git: Become an Expert in Git & GitHub in 4 Hours.

freeCodeCamp & Codecademy (2018–2019)

On both these platforms I found an introduction to the basics of coding. I completed some parts, including Introduction to HTML, Introduction to JavaScript and Learn CSS.

University of Leiden (2005–2009)

I studied Cultural Anthropology and Development Sociology at this university in the Dutch city of Leiden. During my time there I specialised in the cultures of North Africa and Urban Sociology. The thing that drew me most to this field was my wish to better understand why cultures work the way they work and how they developed. I feel that this wish to better understand not just my world, but also other worlds is with me still today.

The Hague University (2003–2005)

At this University / College I completed the first year of the college degree in Dutch Law studies. During my first year I focussed mostly on the international aspects and the morality of Law. The reason why I did not complete this degree, is because I felt my future did not lay in this field and I wanted to focus on other fields.
